Bristol-Myers Squibb Campus Transformation
The O’Brien & Gere/Hueber-Breuer team provided pre-construction services, design, environmental consulting, construction administration, construction management, and commissioning services for the decommissioning, demolition, renovation, and restructuring project at the East Syracuse facility. Environmentally-regulated materials survey, including PCBs, asbestos, lead, and subsequent designs for abatement and remediation were completed. The restructuring included the decontamination and removal of all the penicillin affected buildings, the renovation of existing manufacturing spaces. An overall site master plan was developed to provide an understanding of the site’s utilities infrastructure, existing vs. future utility needs/requirements, and re-routing of utilities to accommodate the new campus layout.
Prior to the construction operations, the team provided BMS with pre-construction services that included the development of detailed cost estimates/budgets, development of a project schedule showing procurement/construction plans and sequencing, and the development of a procurement plan, demolition activities, relocation of several key on-going process operations was required. To facilitate relocations, renovation of existing facilities was undertaken to provide required space and utilities to facilitate the relocations. In total, 45 buildings were demolished, requiring decontamination, asbestos and lead abatement, and utility and infrastructure disconnections and re-routing. These efforts were coordinated and undertaken while existing plant manufacturing and operations remained in service. The demolished buildings were replaced with landscaping, creating a park-like campus. The consolidation of operations significantly reduces the site’s emissions, energy consumption, and overall carbon footprint achieving a more green biotechnology campus.
