CENTRO Bus Transfer Hub
However this LEED® Silver sustainable design is complete with an enclosed climate-controlled waiting area, 22 route-specific bus bays that will make transferring between buses easier for customers, electronic LED displays that will indicate the route and departure time of the next bus, and a bus loading area that will be weather-protected with restrooms and automatic fare vending machines.
The CENTRO Transfer Hub is a state-of-the-art transit center featuring 22 bus bays covered by a 55,000-square-foot canopy and an adjoining indoor waiting area for patrons. The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority moved its operations to the heart of downtown Syracuse from a busy open intersection. It’s weather-protected urban facility sits on 1.8 acres with a 8,440 SF building with office, waiting area, and vending spaces. A saw-tooth bus bay configuration was employed and organized along a central island and two flanking islands to allow independent arrival and departure of buses to assigned locations.
One of the greatest challenges of this project was the implementation of a variety of hard concrete wearing surfaces throughout the expanse of an entire city block. Features such as: heated bus platforms and sidewalks, a storm-water infiltration system that captures rainwater and removes particulates via a hydrodynamic device, and LED overhead lights with automatic brightness sensors maintain uniform lighting throughout the Hub contribute to its sustainable features.
The Transfer Hub received a Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council for its sustainable construction and design.
